 What Causes COPD?

COPD, Smoking, Air Pollution, Etc.

what causes copdCOPD is a combination of bronchitis and emphysema. These two diseases cause the bronchial tubes to be blocked and they restrict the flow of air to the lungs. It’s also a permanent condition that can get worse with time.

In the United States, smoking cigarettes causes more COPD more often than anything else. Statistics obtained from a variety of studies show that about fifteen percent of all smokers will develop COPD during their lifetimes. This is because the smoke from cigarettes causes damage to the lungs. If you are a smoker it’s highly recommended that you stop as soon as possible.

There's reason to believe second hand smoke also causes COPD. So even if you don't smoke yourself, it’s also a good idea to avoid being around those who do. No one really knows what effect second-hand smoke will have.

What else causes COPD? Both indoor and outdoor pollution can also cause COPD or make your symptoms worse. Silica and similar types of pollutants ar can be a culprit along with certain kinds of cooking stoves.

There is also a genetic condition called AAT that can cause COPD but this condition is very rare.

The first step in living with this form of severe lung disease involves identifying what causes COPD and working closely with your health care provider. Your doctor will need to know your complete medical and family history along with what symptoms you’re experiencing.

It’s essential to your health that you find the best way to treat your specific type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Do this by being completely honest with your doctor and following his or her advice. If this condition is left untreated it will most likely get much worse. The sooner you get medical help for this type of lung disease the better off you will be.

There are treatments available and medications that you can take to help make living with COPD easier. It may even be possible to reverse some of the damage done. Again, talk to your medical professional for advice.
