Legionnaire's Disease Still Claiming Lives
News reports recently indicate that even though Legionnaires Disease hasn't gotten much media attention
recently, it continues to take lives tragically and unexpectedly.
In Kent England, one person has died and two are seriously ill from Legionnaires. As of this
writing, there have been a total of five cases reported.
Another woman in Thatcham, Berkshire, England died of Legionnaires disease recently after she
was misdiagnosed with swine flu.
A 37-year-old man in Chicago died from Legionnaires August 10, 2009. Robert Pierce, of
Plainfield, apparently contracted the disease several weeks ago. Pierce, an electrician, had been working in a
Chicago Transit Authority rail yard when he was accidentally sprayed with stagnant water from a vehicle washer. He
became ill the next day.
Victims of Legionnaire's typically get the disease by inhaling mist or vapor that has been
contaminated with a certain type of bacteria. It is not always fatal, but can be.
