A New Device For Detecting Lung Cancer
Has there been a significant advance in early lung cancer
detection methods? It appears so.
Science is catching up with science fiction where detecting lung cancer is concerned.
Many science fiction shows and movies, especially Star Trek, have featured a medical device that
could diagnose or even cure certain ailments just by passing over them in a "magic wand" fashion.
Now researchers say they've come up with a device, inspired by NASA's Nose shuttle low-level
ammonia leak that is highly sensitive in detecting lung cancer lung cancer.
According to a report presented at the International Brain Mapping & Intraoperative Surgical
Planning Society Conference at the University of California, the device can also help surgeons determine where and
how to operate on lung cancer by pinpointing cancerous cells.
The new device appears to be an advance in helping doctors detect diabetes too when patients
breathe into it.
US chemists had previously reported that skin cancer or melanoma is associated with a special
odor which might help physicians detect the presence of the disease with a scanner developed for sniffing these
chemicals.
